Kite Surfing

Kite Surfing

In this day and age, a growing number of men and women are becoming involved in different extreme sports that involve the use of a power kite.  One of the most popular forms of these types of extreme sports is kite surfing.  Kite surfing is defined by extreme sports experts as:

“Kite surfing, also known as kite boarding, involves using a power kite to pull a small surfboard (on water), a wheeled board on land, or a snowboard over snow.”

When it comes to kitesurfing, there are some definite safety rules that you need to keep in mind.  While any extreme sport such as kite surfing carries with it a risk of injury, you can minimize that risk by paying attention to a number of safety rules.

While it might seem obvious, you need to remember to never participate in kitesurfing near power lines or airport.  You need to pay close attention to what is around you.

Never participate in kite surfing when a thunder storm is brewing.  Never participate in kite surfing in any kind of stormy weather.  In the end, it simply is not worth the risk

Never participate in kite surfing in offshore wind.

Make certain that there is an available beach downwind from where you start kitesurfing.  In other words, make certain that you will have access to an open beach onto which you can maneuver when necessary

Don't kitesurf in crowded water.  Kitesurfing in crowded water is a danger to you and to those around you.

When kitesurfing, get yourself out into the open water as soon as you can, as quickly as you possibly can.

Pay attention to wind speeds when you are kitesurfing.  Do not kitesurf in strong wind if you are a beginner (in winds at 20+ knots) and be careful even if you are an experienced kitesurfer (in winds at 30+ knots).

Wear a life jacket or impact vest when kitesurfing.  Wear a helmet when kitesurfing.

Remember:  Flying lines can cut when the kite is flying while you are kitesurfing.

When kitesurfing never allow yourself or others to end up in the position where you (or others) might get tangled up in the flying lines.
