Chinese Dragon Kites
A Look at Traditional Chinese Dragon Kites
Weifang
China is the home of traditional Chinese kite
building. This is the home of the beloved and time
honored traditional
Chinese dragon kites.
All Chinese dragon kites designed and flying today can
trace their venerable origins back to this province in
ancient China.
Chinese dragon kites glitter in the sunlight and have more
impact than almost any other kite you will see in the
sky. They are made by creating a head that is heavy
because it serves to balance a very lengthy tail.
Some of these Chinese dragon kites are very small.
Other Chinese dragon kites that have a tail span alone of
over one hundred feet. In so many ways, there really is
nothing quite as spectacular as huge Chinese dragon kites
lofting away into the sky above. There is something
almost thrilling about seeing these high flyers in
action. Watching Chinese dragon kites can make a
person’s heart beat faster and faster.
The smaller kites can be flown by an individual with
relative ease but the large ceremonial type Chinese dragon
kites are manned by an entire team of people on the
ground. The giant Chinese dragon kites can only be
flown successfully by a team of people who have significant
experience in managing these types of kites.
Chinese dragon kites are great flying kites as with even
the slightest decent wind they will fly. Each
traditional Chinese dragon kite is individually hand
painted and each one is very unique. In so many ways,
traditional Chinese dragon kites are actual works of
art. Indeed, many people actually do forgo flying
their Chinese dragon kites and use them as wall decorations
in their homes or offices.
There are certain characteristics that distinguish Chinese
dragon kites, one from another. For example, some
traditional Chinese dragon kites include such features as
deer horns. In ancient Chinese folklore, deer are
ridden by the immortals, Deer horns on a Chinese
dragon kite represent longevity and good luck. (This
is merely one example amongst hundreds of symbols that can
be and are included on traditional Chinese dragon
kites.)
